In the Feb. 2002 issue of Dollhouse Miniatures, they published a pattern and instructions for my Flag Heart rug.  Unfortunately, some of the important steps in finishing the rug were omitted. The following technique is how I finish all my rugs, just adapt the details to your design.

Finishing Your Rug:

When all the punching is done, and you’ve checked the right side before fixing any small bald spots, you can remove the fabric from the hoop.  Spread  Aleene’s Liquid Fusible Web (Joann’s and Michael’s carry it) on the back side of the unworked fabric around the outside of the rug, for a depth of about 3/8” and also about a ¼” onto the outer edge of the rug itself.  When the Fusible Web is dry, trim the fabric to slightly under 3/8” and trim off, clipping the hem allowance as shown.  Iron this hem back, following directions on the Fusible Web, turning the rug over to make sure none of the unworked fabric shows on the front.  If you do the ironing an hour after applying the Fusible Web, it retains some tackiness that helps finger press the hem in place before you start pressing.  If desired, after the hem is turned, the entire stitched back of the rug may be painted with a dilute mixture of glue and water, to prevent unraveling.  Turn the rug over, and carefully trim any raised loops with small, sharp scissors.
